Aadhaar Card Address Update Online: Step-by-Step Guide
Moved house, changed cities after a new job, or got married and shifted in with family? Your Aadhaar address should follow you, because banks, telecom companies and many government services read it straight from Aadhaar. This guide explains the three ways to change it and which one suits your situation.
Eligibility for Aadhaar address change
Anyone whose current address differs from the one printed on their Aadhaar. A correct address matters when you open a bank account using e-KYC, apply for a passport, get a new SIM card, register as a voter at your new home, or receive a printed PVC Aadhaar card by post.
There are three routes:
- Online with your own address proof: best if you have a bank statement, utility bill, rent agreement or similar document in your own name at the new address.
- Online through the head of family: useful for spouses, children and others who live with a parent, spouse or relative but have no address proof in their own name.
- At an Aadhaar centre: needed if your mobile number is not linked to Aadhaar, or if you prefer in-person help.
Documents required for Aadhaar address update
Your own proof of address. UIDAI accepts a long list of documents. Common ones are a passport, bank passbook or statement with a photo or seal, electricity, water or gas bill not older than three months, a registered rent or sale agreement, and a ration card. The name on the document must match your Aadhaar name, and the address must be the new one. Always check UIDAI’s current list before uploading, as it changes from time to time.
Head of family option. The head of family can be anyone listed on a document that shows your relationship, such as a parent, spouse or guardian. They must already have the new address on their own Aadhaar. You will need their Aadhaar number and a relationship proof such as a ration card, marriage certificate, passport or school record. If no such document exists, UIDAI allows a self-declaration from the head of family in its prescribed format.
Scans. For online updates, upload a clear colour scan in PDF, JPEG or PNG format. Blurred, cropped or password-protected files are a common reason for rejection.
Step-by-step Aadhaar address update process
Online with your own proof:
- Log in to myAadhaar with your Aadhaar number and the OTP sent to your linked mobile.
- Choose the online update service and select Address.
- Type the new address exactly as it appears on your document, including PIN code.
- Upload the scan, review everything, and submit.
- Save the Service Request Number (SRN) to track the request.
Through the head of family:
- Log in to myAadhaar and choose the head-of-family based address update.
- Enter the head of family’s Aadhaar number and upload the relationship proof.
- Pay the fee and submit.
- The head of family gets an SMS and must log in and approve within 30 days. If they reject or ignore it, the request closes.
At an Aadhaar centre:
- Find a nearby Aadhaar Seva Kendra, bank or post office centre on the UIDAI website and book a slot if possible.
- Carry your original proof of address.
- Fill the update form, give your fingerprint or iris scan, and pay the fee.
- Keep the acknowledgement slip with the Update Request Number (URN).
After approval, download the updated e-Aadhaar from myAadhaar. It carries the same legal value as the printed letter.

Common problems and fixes
OTP not received. Your mobile number may not be linked or may have changed. Update the mobile number at an Aadhaar centre first; this cannot be done online.
Request rejected. Usual reasons are a name mismatch, an old utility bill, or an unreadable scan. Fix the issue and apply again with a fresh request.
Address appears in the wrong language or order. Type each field carefully. Aadhaar also shows your address in your regional language, which is auto-transliterated, so check the preview before submitting.
Head of family did not approve in time. Start a new request and remind them to log in promptly.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a limit on how many times I can change my address?
UIDAI does not set a fixed limit for address updates, unlike name or date of birth changes, but each request must be backed by a valid proof.
Do I need to update my address on PAN separately?
PAN records do not depend on your Aadhaar address for most purposes, but banks, voter rolls and passport records do not update automatically. Update each one where needed.
Can I update the address of my child?
Yes. A child can be linked through a parent as head of family, or a parent can visit a centre with the child.
Will I get a new Aadhaar letter by post?
UIDAI may post an updated letter, but you do not need to wait. Download the e-Aadhaar as soon as the update is approved, or order a PVC card online.
