EPF Interest Calculator

Short Answer

Under Paragraph 60 of the EPF Scheme, 1952, EPF interest is calculated monthly on your running balance and credited once a year (at the declared 8.25% rate for FY 2024-25, notified via EPFO / PIB). If your employee contribution in a financial year exceeds ₹2,50,000, interest on the excess employee portion is taxable under Section 10(11) & 10(12) of the Income-tax Act. Employer contributions do not count toward this ₹2.5 lakh limit.

Tax on EPF Interest Above ₹2,50,000 Employee Contribution (Finance Act, 2021)

The ₹2,50,000 annual threshold applies strictly to the employee's own contributions (mandatory EPF plus VPF). Employer contributions do not count toward this limit.

Your employee contribution for the year is ₹60,000, which is within the ₹2,50,000 employee tax-free limit. 100% of your earned EPF interest (₹11,736) remains tax-free.

How EPFO Calculates Interest (The Working in Plain Words)

Interest is calculated monthly on the running balance (Paragraph 60, EPF Scheme, 1952). For each month, opening balance is added to that month's total contributions (₹6,500). The sum of all 12 monthly balances comes to ₹17,07,000. Applying the annual interest rate of 8.25% (8.25 / 1,200 per month) yields ₹11,736 which is credited at the end of the financial year.

Official Rules for EPF Interest Calculation & Tax

1. Monthly Balance Method (Paragraph 60)

EPFO does not compute interest purely on the opening balance. Instead, each month's running balance is tracked. When your salary is credited and employee + employer shares are deposited, the running balance increases. The annual interest is the sum of interest earned on each month's balance.

2. Taxation of EPF Interest Above ₹2.5 Lakhs Employee Contribution

Under the Finance Act 2021 amendments to Section 10(11) and 10(12) read with Rule 9D, the ₹2,50,000 threshold applies strictly to the employee's own statutory and voluntary (VPF) contributions. Employer contributions do not count toward this limit. If employee contributions exceed ₹2,50,000 in a financial year, interest accrued on the excess employee portion is taxable as income under "Income from Other Sources".

3. Difference Between EPF and EPS Portions

Employer’s 12% minus the EPS share (8.33% of wage, capped at ₹1,250) goes to your EPF. Only this remaining EPF share is credited to your EPF accumulation and earns the 8.25% interest rate. The EPS share goes toward pension service.
