Withdraw Your EPF Online: the complete guide

If you work, or used to work, for an employer covered by the Employees’ Provident Fund, you can withdraw your money online without visiting an EPFO office or getting your employer’s signature. This guide explains which form to choose, what must be ready in your UAN account, and how tax deduction works.

Who needs this

You can file an online claim if you have a Universal Account Number (UAN) that is activated and linked to Aadhaar. Typical reasons are:

  • You left a job and want your full provident fund balance (final settlement, Form 19).
  • You are still working but need money for illness, education, marriage, a house or another approved reason (advance, Form 31).
  • You want the pension part of your account (withdrawal benefit, Form 10C), which is possible only if you have less than 10 years of pensionable service.

EPFO revised its withdrawal rules after its board’s decisions in October 2025. In short: you need 12 months of membership for most advances, you must keep 25% of the balance while employed, and after losing a job you can take most of the money at once and the rest after 12 months of unemployment. Pension withdrawal now has a longer waiting period too. Check the latest position on the EPFO website before you apply, because these rules have been changing.

Documents explained

You do not upload many papers for an online claim. What matters is that your UAN profile is complete.

Activated UAN and Aadhaar-linked mobile. The claim is signed with an OTP sent to the mobile number registered with Aadhaar.

Aadhaar seeded and verified. Your name, date of birth and gender in EPFO must match Aadhaar exactly. A mismatch is the most common reason claims fail.

Bank account seeded. The account must be in your own name with a correct IFSC. EPFO no longer asks you to upload a cancelled cheque or passbook for online claims, because the account is verified when it is seeded.

PAN seeded. Not compulsory to file, but if tax is deducted, a missing PAN means a much higher deduction.

Form 15G or 15H. Optional. If your service is under five years and your total income is below the taxable limit, uploading this form stops tax being deducted. Form 15H is for people aged 60 or above.

Date of exit. For a final settlement or pension claim, your former employer must mark the date you left. If they have not, you can do it yourself on the portal after two months.

Step-by-step process

  1. Log in to the EPFO member portal with your UAN, password and captcha.
  2. Check KYC. Under Manage, confirm that Aadhaar, bank and PAN show as verified.
  3. Check your service history. Under View, make sure all your previous jobs appear under one UAN. If an older account is separate, transfer it first; otherwise your service may count as less than five years and attract tax.
  4. Mark your date of exit if you are making a final or pension claim and your employer has not done it.
  5. Open the claim form under Online Services, then Claim. Enter your bank account number to verify it.
  6. Choose the claim type. Pick final settlement, an advance with its purpose and amount, or pension withdrawal.
  7. Upload Form 15G or 15H if you qualify and want to avoid tax deduction.
  8. Submit with Aadhaar OTP. Accept the undertaking and enter the OTP.
  9. Track the claim under Online Services, Track Claim Status. Money goes straight to the seeded bank account.

Fees and timelines

Filing a claim is free. Many smaller claims are settled automatically within three to seven days; others are usually processed within about 20 days.

Tax is deducted at source only when your total service is under five years and the amount is over ₹50,000.

Situation Tax deducted
Five years or more of service None
Under five years, ₹50,000 or less None
Under five years, over ₹50,000, PAN linked 10%
Under five years, over ₹50,000, no PAN Higher rate, around 20%

The tax deducted is not the final tax. It appears in your Form 26AS, and you settle the actual tax when filing your income tax return.

Common problems and fixes

Claim option not showing. Usually Aadhaar, bank or date of exit is missing. Fix KYC first and check again after a day or two.

Claim rejected for name or date mismatch. Use the joint declaration option on the portal to correct details, which your employer then approves.

Advance amount lower than expected. The 25% minimum balance rule and the limits for each purpose cap what you can take while employed.

Unexpected tax deduction. Your old job may not have been transferred, so your service looks shorter than five years. Transfer old accounts before claiming.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need my employer’s signature?

No. Online claims with Aadhaar-verified KYC go directly to EPFO. Your employer only needs to have updated your date of exit for final claims.

Can I withdraw everything as soon as I leave my job?

Under the revised rules you can take most of it immediately and the rest after 12 months without a job. Retirement after 55, permanent disability or leaving India permanently allow the full amount.

What happens to the pension part if I have over 10 years of service?

You cannot withdraw it in cash. You get a scheme certificate, and the pension is paid when you reach the eligible age.

How do I avoid TDS?

Link your PAN, transfer older accounts so your service counts in full, and upload Form 15G or 15H if your income is below the taxable limit.

Still Rejected? Official Escalation Route

If your online correction or employer approval is stuck after following these steps, you can file an official complaint on the EPFO I-Grievance Management System (EPFiGMS).
