Register Your Marriage in Karnataka: the complete guide

A marriage certificate is the simplest proof that you are legally married. You need it for passports, visas, joint bank accounts, insurance nominations and changing your surname. In Karnataka, marriages are registered by the Department of Stamps and Registration, and the application can now be started online on Kaveri 2.0. This guide explains both routes: the Hindu Marriage Act and the Special Marriage Act.

Who needs this

Hindu Marriage Act. Use this if both partners are Hindu, Buddhist, Jain or Sikh and the wedding has already taken place with customary rites. The Sub-Registrar records the marriage that already happened.

Special Marriage Act. Use this if the partners follow different religions, or if either of you is not covered by the Hindu Marriage Act, or if you prefer a civil marriage. Here the Marriage Officer either solemnises the marriage in the office, or registers a marriage that already happened, after a public notice period.

Age rules apply in both cases: the groom must be at least 21 and the bride at least 18. Neither partner can have a living spouse.

Documents explained

Age proof. A birth certificate, SSLC marks card or passport for each partner.

Address proof. Aadhaar, voter ID, passport or a utility bill.

Photographs. Passport-size photos of both partners, and for Hindu marriages a photograph of the wedding ceremony.

Wedding invitation. For Hindu marriages, the invitation card helps prove the date and place of the ceremony.

Notice and declaration (Special Marriage Act). You file a notice of intended marriage, and later both partners sign a declaration about age, marital status and prohibited relationships.

Witnesses. The Special Marriage Act requires three witnesses. Sub-Registrars commonly ask for witnesses for Hindu marriages too, so bring two or three adults with ID proof.

Previous marriage papers. If either partner was married before, bring the divorce decree or the death certificate of the former spouse.

Foreign partner. A passport, visa and often a single-status or no-objection certificate from the embassy.

Step-by-step process

  1. Create an account on Kaveri 2.0. Sign up on the Kaveri portal using an Aadhaar-linked mobile number and pick marriage registration.
  2. Fill in the details. Enter both partners’ details, the wedding date and venue (for Hindu marriages), and the witnesses. Upload proofs and photos.
  3. Special Marriage Act notice. If you use this Act, the notice is published by the Marriage Officer. At least one partner must have lived in that officer’s area for 30 days before giving notice. Anyone can object during the next 30 days.
  4. Book an appointment. After the notice period (Special Marriage Act) or straight away (Hindu Marriage Act), choose a date at the Sub-Registrar office. Some Bapuji Seva Kendras and Grama One centres also accept marriage applications.
  5. Visit with witnesses. Both partners and the witnesses attend with original documents. Signatures and identity checks are done in front of the officer.
  6. Get the certificate. The marriage is entered in the register and a certificate is issued. Certified copies can be requested later.

Fees and timelines

Item Fee
Hindu marriage application ₹5
Hindu marriage certified copy ₹10
Special Marriage Act notice ₹3
Special Marriage Act solemnisation or registration ₹10
Solemnisation outside the office ₹15 extra

These are the government fees published by IGR Karnataka. Online, scanning or centre charges may be added. A Hindu marriage can usually be registered on the day of the appointment. A Special Marriage Act marriage takes at least 30 days from the notice, and must happen within three months of it.

Common problems and fixes

  • Name spelt differently in documents. Carry an affidavit or gazette notification explaining the difference, or correct the documents before applying.
  • Wedding photos missing. Some offices refuse without a ceremony photo. Get one from the photographer or family before your appointment.
  • Witness did not turn up. The office cannot complete the entry. Reschedule and bring a backup witness.
  • Objection under the Special Marriage Act. The Marriage Officer must look into it within 30 days. Keep proof of age and single status ready.
  • Inter-faith couple applied under the Hindu Marriage Act. That registration may be refused. Use the Special Marriage Act instead.

Frequently asked questions

Is marriage registration compulsory in Karnataka?

The Supreme Court has said marriages should be registered, and in practice you need the certificate for passports and visas. Registering soon after the wedding avoids trouble later.

Can we register a marriage that happened years ago?

Yes. Under the Hindu Marriage Act you can still register an older marriage, though the office may ask for extra proof such as an affidavit and old photographs.

Do both partners need to be present?

Yes. Both partners must appear before the officer to sign. Witnesses must also attend.

Can we apply in any office?

Apply in the office whose area covers the place of marriage or where either partner lives. For the Special Marriage Act, it must be where one partner has lived for the last 30 days.

How do I get a copy later?

Request a certified copy through Kaveri or at the Sub-Registrar office by paying the copy fee.
