Update Name in Bank Account After Name Change India: Documents and Branch Process

Banks in India are required to update your name in their records as part of KYC compliance when you change your legal name. The process requires a physical branch visit in most cases. There is no standard online-only route, as name changes involve identity re-verification.

Update Aadhaar and PAN first

Banks use Aadhaar and PAN for KYC. If your Aadhaar and PAN still show the old name, the branch may refuse to process the change or ask you to return after updating them. Update Aadhaar (2–7 days) and PAN (2–5 days) before visiting the bank.

Documents required

  • Written request letter addressed to the Branch Manager (state your account number, old name, new name and reason)
  • Updated Aadhaar in the new name (self-attested photocopy + original for verification)
  • Updated PAN card in the new name (self-attested photocopy)
  • Marriage certificate or Gazette notification copy as supporting proof
  • Notarised affidavit (some banks ask for this in addition to the gazette)
  • Two passport-size photographs

Step-by-step process

  1. Collect the bank’s name-change or KYC update form. Call the branch in advance and ask what form they use. Many banks have a specific “Change of Personal Details” form.

  2. Fill in the form and prepare your document set. Carry originals of all documents; the branch will take copies and verify against originals.

  3. Submit at the home branch. The name change must usually be done at your home (account-maintaining) branch.

  4. Request a new cheque book, passbook and debit card. After the name is updated in the core banking system, your old cheque book may be cancelled. Request a fresh one in the new name. Debit cards usually need to be reissued.

  5. Update internet banking. Log in to net banking and verify that the name shown matches the new name. Some banks auto-update; others require a separate digital request.

Which banks accept which documents

Most scheduled commercial banks in India (SBI, HDFC, ICICI, Axis, etc.) accept:

  • Marriage certificate + updated Aadhaar (for marriage cases)
  • Gazette notification + updated Aadhaar + PAN (for all other cases)

Some private lenders and cooperative banks may additionally ask for a notarised affidavit. Confirm with your branch before visiting.

Common problems

Branch refusing to update without a gazette notification after marriage. Under RBI KYC guidelines, a marriage certificate with updated Aadhaar is a valid basis for a name change at a bank. Politely escalate to the Branch Manager and quote the RBI KYC Master Direction.

Joint account holders. If you hold a joint account, the name change affects only the holder whose name is being changed. The other holder’s details are not affected.

Demat and trading accounts. These are governed by SEBI KYC rules. Update your name at the depository participant (broker) with the same documents — they usually require a KYC modification form in addition to the supporting documents.
