Update Name on Aadhaar After Name Change: SSUP Online and Enrolment Centre Steps

Updating your name on Aadhaar is typically the first step after a legal name change. An updated Aadhaar in the new name serves as a valid identity proof for PAN corrections, passport re-issue, bank KYC updates and driving licence corrections — making every subsequent step easier.

Can you update Aadhaar online?

UIDAI offers an online name update via the SSUP (Self Service Update Portal) at ssup.uidai.gov.in. However, name corrections are handled differently from address updates. As of October 2026, name changes typically require an in-person visit to an Aadhaar enrolment centre for biometric verification. Check the SSUP portal — if the name update is available online in your login, you can proceed digitally; otherwise, visit a centre.

Documents required

  • Notarised affidavit declaring the name change (old name → new name) — accepted by UIDAI for all reasons
  • Marriage certificate — if the reason is marriage
  • Gazette notification copy — if the name change was published in the Official Gazette
  • School or board mark sheet — accepted for minor spelling corrections
  • Current Aadhaar card or Aadhaar number

Step-by-step: visiting an Aadhaar enrolment centre

  1. Find a centre. Go to appointments.uidai.gov.in to find a centre near you and book an appointment. Walk-ins are accepted at many centres but appointment holders are usually given priority.

  2. Carry originals and self-attested copies. Bring the originals of all documents for verification. The operator will scan them.

  3. Fill the update/correction form. At the counter, ask for an Aadhaar Update/Correction form. Tick the “Name” checkbox. Write the correct new name as you want it to appear.

  4. Give biometrics. The operator will capture your fingerprints and photograph. This is part of the verification process.

  5. Pay ₹50 and collect the URN. You will receive an Update Request Number (URN) on a slip. Use it to track the status.

  6. Track status and download. Go to myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in and enter your URN to track the update. Once processed (usually 2–7 working days), download the updated e-Aadhaar. Order a PVC Aadhaar card for ₹50 if you need a physical card.

Common problems

Name not updated even after 7 days. Some corrections take up to 30 days if they are referred for additional verification. Track the URN. If there is no movement after 30 days, contact UIDAI at 1947.

Centre says your document is not accepted. Ensure your affidavit is on stamp paper and attested. Unattested typed pages on plain paper are not accepted. A gazette notification is usually accepted without any further requirement.

Aadhaar portal not showing updated name. Download the updated e-Aadhaar PDF and check. The physical address panel in the PDF will show the new name.
