Passport Name Change After Marriage or Gazette India: Re-issue Steps and Fee

After a legal name change, you need to apply for a passport re-issue — the name on a passport cannot be changed without issuing a new booklet. This guide covers both the marriage certificate route and the Gazette notification route.

Update Aadhaar and PAN before applying

The Passport Seva system cross-verifies your details against Aadhaar and income tax records. If your Aadhaar and PAN still show the old name, the application may be flagged. Update Aadhaar first (2–7 days), then PAN (2–5 days), then apply for the passport.

Documents required

  • Current passport in the old name (original; will be submitted and cancelled)
  • Updated Aadhaar in the new name
  • Updated PAN card in the new name
  • Marriage certificate (if the reason is marriage)
  • Gazette notification copy (if the reason is a surname or other name change)
  • Notarised affidavit on stamp paper (some PSKs ask for it in addition to the gazette)
  • Passport-size photographs as per Passport Seva specifications

Step-by-step: Passport Seva online application

  1. Log in to passportindia.gov.in. Create an account if you don’t have one.

  2. Choose “Apply for Fresh Passport / Re-issue of Passport”. Select Re-issue and choose Change in existing personal particulars as the reason.

  3. Fill the form. Enter your new name, updated address, and details from the updated Aadhaar. The form auto-saves.

  4. Book an appointment at a PSK. After submitting the form and paying, book a slot at your nearest Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office PSK (POPSK). Tatkaal appointments are available only at PSKs.

  5. Pay the fee. Normal 36-page booklet: ₹1,500. Tatkaal: ₹4,000 (₹2,000 base + ₹2,000 Tatkaal surcharge).

  6. Visit the PSK with originals. Carry all originals and self-attested copies. Biometrics (photo and fingerprints) are captured.

  7. Police verification (if applicable). Most re-issue applications are cleared without fresh police verification if you have an existing police-verified passport. First-time applicants and some re-issues still require it.

  8. Track and collect. Track your application on the Passport Seva portal. The passport is dispatched by India Post Speed Post.

Fee summary

Application type Fee (36-page booklet)
Normal, Indian address ₹1,500
Tatkaal, Indian address ₹4,000
Normal, 60-page booklet ₹2,000
Tatkaal, 60-page booklet ₹4,500

Common problems

PSK asking for the Gazette even though the change was after marriage. This can happen if the PSK officer is not following the latest circular. Produce the marriage certificate and request escalation to the supervisor. MEA instructions state that a marriage certificate is sufficient for name changes after marriage.

Address mismatch between Aadhaar and application. Make sure the address on the application matches your current Aadhaar exactly. Even minor differences (road vs. st., abbreviated vs. full) can cause issues.

Application flagged because PAN still shows old name. Update PAN first, wait for the correction to reflect, then apply for the passport.
