Update Name on Insurance Policies After Name Change: Life, Health and Motor
Updating your name on insurance policies ensures there are no disputes or delays when filing a claim or receiving maturity proceeds. Life, health and vehicle insurance each have slightly different documentation requirements, but all require an endorsement on your policy document.
How insurance name updates work
Insurance companies in India are regulated by IRDAI and require KYC re-verification when personal particulars change. The name update does not cancel or replace your policy; the insurer issues an endorsement slip or an updated policy schedule reflecting your new legal name.
Documents required
- Written request letter: addressed to the branch manager or policy servicing team, mentioning policy number, old name, new name and reason for change.
- Updated Aadhaar: in your new name, self-attested.
- Updated PAN card: required for financial KYC compliance.
- Marriage certificate: if changing name after marriage.
- Gazette notification copy: for surname, spelling, or other non-marriage name changes.
- Updated RC (Registration Certificate): required specifically for motor vehicle insurance so that the RC and policy names match.
Step-by-step process
- Update Aadhaar and PAN first. Insurers verify identity using Aadhaar and PAN KYC. Having them updated first prevents verification delays.
- Collect the name change or endorsement form. Visit the home branch or download the endorsement request form from your insurer’s portal (e.g. LIC or private insurer).
- Submit the application with proof. Submit the filled form along with self-attested photocopies of your updated Aadhaar, PAN, and marriage certificate or Gazette notification. Show originals for verification.
- Vehicle insurance specific step. For motor insurance, update your driving licence and vehicle RC at the RTO first, then submit the updated RC to your motor insurer.
- Receive endorsement document. Within 7 to 21 working days, the insurer will issue an endorsement schedule showing your new name. Keep this safely with your original policy bond.
Common problems
Claim delay due to mismatched bank account. Ensure your bank account name is also updated so that maturity or claim payouts via NEFT match your policy name.
Vehicle insurance name mismatch with RC. Motor insurers can deny claims if the policyholder name does not match the RC registration. Always update the RC first.
